Here's a sad story...Dreams are not always fulfilled!

Since, childhood I wanted to be an engineer. I was fascinated by computers and learnt C programming(Basics) in seventh grade only. I was so interested in robotics, aerospace engineering and artificial intelligence that I was indulged in reading about them whole night. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, Sergey Brin, Larry Page, Pranav Mistry, Raj Reddy, Vijay Kumar(Roboticist), etc were my childhood heros.
So, From 9th standard only, I started preparing for engineering entrances. In 2013 I gave my first attempt to JEE examination and performed poorly. Meanwhile, I passed 12th CBSE scoring 93%. I was an intelligent kid but I was unable to perform under pressure. Then, I decided to take another and final attempt to it. In 2014 April after my JEE paper, I fainted. My mom took me to hospital and Doctors advised an MRI scan. Reports came that I have brain tumor. So, there weren't any faults in my preparation rather My brain was unable to function in pressure because it had already been in tremendous pressure due to a tumor inside my skull. I was not able to give any exam of engineering which means I can never be an engineer now, childhood dream shattered.

So, after my surgery I joined Fergusson College,Pune to pursue a degree in Basic Sciences.
I am still into computer programming stuff, learning Python, Django, JavaScript, Algorithms etc by myself.
Some of my works -

1.  A software to assign writers to Blind students. (Developed in Python, Tkinter)

2. A Python Script to send an e-mail from terminal itself.

3. A Game written in Python, based on concepts of Game theory.

4. Rubik's Cube stimulation(Python, matplotlib, numpy, Tkinter)

many more to come...

I was a guy who knew what he wanted to do since childhood but now at the age of 20 he is off-track and searching for his new passion.
I fought with brain-tumor, now I am on a quest to find meaning in life.
In fact, I am yet confused among physics, mathematics and statistics which one to choose for majors.
I don't know where destiny is taking me, Let's Hope for the best... !

P.S - I am happy, no sympathy please :)
This is how I am now, after an year; enjoying life at Fergusson College.

@Chote_I've always felt proud and inspired from you. Some events happen for good and they make strong people like you even stronger. I believe the Tumor was good in that sense. You've achieved more after the tumor phase was over. Infact, you've made others like me and Vivek(from BA) achieve more after being a part of our ventures. Statistika and Green Steps will never be the same. We've together set up benchmarks for the rest of the years. Including the TIE DAY. And you're doing better than many IITians. Now let me brag a little about you.

@Others_I've seen this guy ever since he has come to Pune. Actually I see him everyday, he's my roommate. :P And trust me it has been great bcz of him. On the very first day as I opened the door for a cute chubby kid with a deep scar in the head, I din't know that the boy has come out of a major brain tumor surgery just a month back. People find it hard to get up after mere fractures and here was a boy with a crack in the head. With in a month or two in Pune, he was playing football in the college (no headers) with teams dying to have him on their side, defeating people with supposedly strong arms in arm wrestling (though I'm leading with 3:1), the kid is amazing. And it's not just the Computer Programs, he's good at a lot of other things. He plays Violin like a pro and even violins with rusted strings sound good with his skill, he's a good wicket keeper, a good TT player and a good writer. Not to forget to mention the Murari Primes he found out in Sept. On a different note, Vipul is in a way the Krishna Kanhaiya of our college, with girls flocking around him. Not just from first year but second and third year too. Trust me I've rarely seen him with less than 4 to 5 girls around. He's always available. For everyone.

Congrats chote. It's been a wonderful experience after coming across you. Miles to go. :)

Are they equally "talented", not sure. But yes they all have worked equally hard.

At least for the first 100-200 rankers, they are almost the same. Had the test been conducted some other day, may be the 200 ranker would have come first. The so called luck factor then comes into play. Many uncertain things play a role which distinguishes, say a 800 ranker from some one with rank of 100 like:

  • The paper code: Some of us get a code where all the tougher or lengthier questions at the start and at the end. So from wherever you start, you would believe that this year's paper is indeed tough. Moral down. Game over!
  • The heat: The exam is in the May end or first week of June. The temperatures across India are at their peak (somewhere in mid 40s!). Did I forget, Oh yes, most of the And to add to that, your exam center has fans which don't provide the comfort but simply add that screeching noise while moving. Believe me, that is certainly one of the worst background noise one would like to have while writing an exam.
  • Level of confidence: Now this mainly depends on how have your mock tests been going till the week before the exam. Accordingly you have your attitude. If you are really confident (and mind it not OVER confident) you would be having an attacking strategy. You would start with a question and not leave until done with it without doubting your approach or method. If you are low on confident, seeing a different question you would try to avoid it.
  • PANIC: the fear of consequences sometimes makes us panic. Some people suffer from it during the exam and end up with a lower rank.
  • However at times the level of preparation of a 1000 ranker is also different from a top 50 ranker. The latter might have solved more questions, given more mock tests etc.
Hard way :
Step 1) Stop all distractions for one year ....Like Quora,Facebook,Whatsapp....Give up your good mobile...

Step 2) Make some good friends who study hard and enjoy as well...

Step 3) Read Arihant books like DC Pandey and all those ....For basic Physics -H.C.Verma...

Step 4) Mug up Inorganic Chemistry ....

Step 5) Either make your concepts very clear or solve thousands of problems ...

Step 6) Don't chase any girl....(For one year ....If you get into IIT you won't get any...)

Easy way : There is no EASY WAY

Don't straight away start with JEE level questions, start with your boards, solve sums, read theory. Feeling confident? Yes? Start with mains. If no. See where you are going wrong. Address the problem.  I'm pretty strong in math and chem. Because I studied on my own. And physics is weak. I'll be honest. But it was my mistake. Pratice more and more. Remember correcting your mistakes plays a vital role here. All the best.
There is no difference between rank 1 and rank 1000. It is just that day, the guy who got better rank was able to catch the trick in questions faster and most questions were his solved ones. When you go over the data of ranks in AIEEE and IITJEE, you are likely to find that some students get nearby ranks in the two exams while some have contrasting ranks.
Here are some instances:
1) One of my friend ranked in 800s in IIT and in 700s in Mains. (Consistent)
2) I got 901 rank in IIT while 204 in Mains.  (some difference)
3) One of the toppers in my coaching got under 100 rank in mains while 1000+ in IIT.  (more difference)
4) I saw in Advanced-2013 report that some student who barely managed to qualify for advanced (i.e. just in top 1.5 lakh) got under 1000 rank in advanced!    (highly contrasting)

If the same person can get so different rank, we cannot say that the IIT topper knows PCM better than the lakhs of students sitting for JEE. As a matter of fact, IIT-2014 topper got 38th rank in mains.

In a nutshell, your preparation matters a lot but your state of mind and luck factor determines how much percentage of your preparation turns into performance on that day.
My friends are teachers in coaching institutes, and so I have regular interaction with students who prepare for JEE.

Apart from the answers already given by others, here are some observations on what works:

1. Create a daily self-study schedule such that you have time to completely cover and revise all topics from all three subjects, with at least 5 months to spare.

2. Remember - the key to cracking JEE is deep understanding of the fundamentals - its what toppers say time and again. After the knowledge of fundamentals, comes speed and accuracy. Therefore, whenever you study a topic, ensure that you have deep grasp on fundamentals, and then try to solve vast numbers of problems to improve your speed and accuracy.

3. Whenever you self-study, do it with extreme focus and attention. Don't distract yourself -- otherwise you will not manage to keep consistent focus for hours during the exam.

4. Try to increase the difficult of the problems you are solving --- even if JEE won't ask you those problems, by solving them, you are stretching the your capabilities.

5. Most importantly, do not ignore the topics in which you are weak. In fact, pay special attention to them and read extra material in order to develop depth.

Also - learn from others. Talk to others who have cracked the JEE, or read books like The Topper Prepares, or The Secret of My Success. Soon you will get an idea of what others do to crack this exam.

If you look at Anand Kumar's Super 30, the students there come from extremely underprivileged background, and he teaches them in a small classroom. Yet, every year, there are success stories.
I enrolled in ALLEN, Kota in 2013  for preparation of jee 2014 (1 year course).
Before that never took coaching for JEE. By that time I only knew the basics which are taught in CBSE board.
After starting study in Kota it didn't took long time to recognize that cracking JEE requires a different type of approach as compared to boards.
If you've sufficient time (2 or more years):
1. Start your studies steadily and gradually increase your pace and time devoted and never learn away from learning concepts however time it may take.
2. Solve a large number as well as varieties of questions in all the subjects.
3.Always  study NCERT books.
4.Also consider these books:
Physics- HC Verma, DC Pandey

Chemistry- RC Mukherjee, OP Tandon

Maths- Arihant, SL loney( trigo & coordinate), Hall & Knight(algebra), IA Maron( calculus), Arihant(algebra, coordinate, diff calculus, integral calculus etc)

5.keep revising after a while.
6.Solve your coaching sheets completely.
7.Keep an eye on Solved Previous year questions. Solve them on regular intervals to check your progress.
8.Find things which distract you, friends, family, movies, etc , and stay away from them.
9. Give test papers organized by coaching regularly. They can very precisely predict your progress.
10. Have a good moral/ inspiration for cracking JEE and recall it every time you feel down.

For those who have enrolled for 1 year course: You must have a satisfactory knowledge of all the concepts.
Start asap and never turn back.
Use your time to the fullest. Never waste your time in any manner.
But, take smaller breaks once/twice be studies and long breaks on weekends if you can manage.
Rest things are same as above but don't read books or solve questions other than the study material supplied by your coaching . That is more than sufficient.
But don't forget to read NCERT books and HC Verma.
Never think that you've less time. One year is enough if you have the passion and spirit to devote your time and energy in the preparations.

P.S.:-These are based on my personal experiences and cannot be true for everyone. But it'll certainly help you.
Most people have trouble adjusting to physics and chemistry initially. Math is usually not a problem. I would suggest you read up the following topics so that have a better idea of what's about to come:

Chemistry: Mole Concept (one of the most important chapters in physical chem trust me), Volumetric Analysis (Molarity, Molality, Normality etc), Chemical Bonding (forms the cornerstone of all the chemistry to come)

Mathematics: Vectors, Integral and Differential Calculus (Just the basic logic), Coordinate Geometry ( Nothing hi-fi. Learn about various coordinate systems like Cartesian, Polar, Cylindrical etc and its applications in physics)

Physics: Basic Mechanics (Kinematics, Force Concept, Work and Energy). Also try to understand how calculus applies to physics. This will be crucial as you progress in you preparation. (Finding center of mass, Calculating potential energy functions etc)

One of the most important things, and I cannot stress on this enough, is to read. These two months don't start solving problems, instead try to internalize the concepts. Some books which you may want to refer to:

Physics: 1) An Introduction to Mechanics: Kleppner and Kolenkow
              2) Physics by Resnick, Halliday and Krane

Chemistry: 1) Morrison Boyd: The Bible of Organic Chemistry!
                 2) NCERT Books: As far as concepts go, these are pretty darn good!

Math: ML Khanna, maybe. Don't have much of an idea. IA Maron (for basic calculus)

Other books which I found useful during JEE prep:

Concepts of Physics by Dr. HC Verma (Very useful for competitive exams)

Problems in General Physics by I.E. Irodov (Has one of the best collection of physics problems at 11/12th std level, especially for Mechanics)

A Guidebook to Mechanism in Organic Chemistry by Peter Sykes: The best book if you want to understand the logic underlying reaction mechanisms.

Coordinate Geometry by S.L. Loney: A classic on the subject

Another set of tips for prepration of IIT JEE exam:
  1. Plan a daily timetable which should have equal distribution of number of hours to each subject.
  2. While  studying the subject one should invest time in the theory as well as on  solving good questions keeping in mind the time barrier. Each question  should be done in the stipulated time.
  3. Always start from  BASICS because “without base, there will be no altitude” and “journey of  a thousand miles begin with a single step”.
  4. Always BUILD  UP RIGHT & APPROPRIATE BASICS because “once the track of train is  being changed, it will go on only that track”. So always select the  right track and follow
  5. that consistently .
  6. Never  prefer solutions of questions before doing SELF-ATTEMPT at least five  times till you get the right answer because “without falling you cannot  stand at once”.
  7. Never leave the question in between.  There are students who practice a question without attempting it as a  whole, and it’s a very big fault for students and it becomes their  negative point sometimes. So please ignore this.
  8. Always  try a question with CONCEPTUAL APPROACH, not just read the question and  then start doing without getting the point that the question is making.
  9. Your study schedule should be such that you will even easily get the time for a little enjoyment daily.
  10. Most important thing is that you should be having a time schedule as well as REGULARITY in studies.
  11. Also  you will have to take appropriate sleep or rest of at least 6-7 hours a  day if you are preparing for IIT-JEE otherwise your mindset for next  day will not be right in place.
  12. Do not get into the habit  of studying late into night. Instead get up at 6 in the morning and  sleep by 11 at night. This will keep your brain activity maximum in the  morning and will help you when you actually attempt JEE.
  13. Never cram the things, always TRY TO UNDERSTAND the problem by studying the theory conceptually.
  14. And BE CONFIDENT while you are preparing. NEVER LOSE CONFIDENCE.
  15. Always keep contact with intelligent students of your class or at the coaching centre.
  16. Always  keep the copy of latest syllabus of the particular exam. Always check  the syllabus before starting a new topic. Always study everything with  GREAT INTEREST otherwise it will be of NO USE.
