How To Start Studying For JEE

My friends are teachers in coaching institutes, and so I have regular interaction with students who prepare for JEE.

Apart from the answers already given by others, here are some observations on what works:

1. Create a daily self-study schedule such that you have time to completely cover and revise all topics from all three subjects, with at least 5 months to spare.

2. Remember - the key to cracking JEE is deep understanding of the fundamentals - its what toppers say time and again. After the knowledge of fundamentals, comes speed and accuracy. Therefore, whenever you study a topic, ensure that you have deep grasp on fundamentals, and then try to solve vast numbers of problems to improve your speed and accuracy.

3. Whenever you self-study, do it with extreme focus and attention. Don't distract yourself -- otherwise you will not manage to keep consistent focus for hours during the exam.

4. Try to increase the difficult of the problems you are solving --- even if JEE won't ask you those problems, by solving them, you are stretching the your capabilities.

5. Most importantly, do not ignore the topics in which you are weak. In fact, pay special attention to them and read extra material in order to develop depth.

Also - learn from others. Talk to others who have cracked the JEE, or read books like The Topper Prepares, or The Secret of My Success. Soon you will get an idea of what others do to crack this exam.

If you look at Anand Kumar's Super 30, the students there come from extremely underprivileged background, and he teaches them in a small classroom. Yet, every year, there are success stories.
